Part 2

What is a professional introduction?

In a professional context, introducing yourself is usually short, clear and relevant to the situation.

Key principle: You do not need to tell your entire life story. Give the information that is useful for the person you are speaking to.

For example, when meeting a company recruiter, your studies, experience, career interests and skills are usually more relevant than detailed personal information.

When meeting a new classmate, however, you can include more information about your interests or hometown.

Useful opening expressions

Hi, I'm Thomas.

Bonjour, je m'appelle Thomas.

Let me introduce myself.

Permettez-moi de me présenter.

It's nice to meet you.

A simple structure

A strong introduction can follow a simple five-step structure.

Talking about your studies

I'm a first-year business student.

Je suis étudiant(e) en première année de commerce.

I'm studying business administration.

J'étudie la gestion / le management.

I'm currently studying at Montpellier Business School.

J'étudie actuellement à Montpellier Business School.

I'm majoring in marketing.

Je me spécialise en marketing.

Useful distinction: In English, say "I'm studying..." rather than translating directly from French with "I am student in...".

I completed a two-month internship in sales.

I worked part-time in a restaurant.

J'ai travaillé à temps partiel dans un restaurant.

I have experience in customer service.

Part 9

Grammar focus

These grammatical structures are particularly useful when introducing yourself.

Use the present simple for information that is currently true.

Examples: I'm a business student. I live in Montpellier. I speak French and English.

Use the past simple for completed events in the past.

Example: I completed an internship last summer.

Use the present perfect when the experience is relevant to the present.

Example: I have gained experience in customer service.

Use I am for identity, characteristics and current situations.

Use I have for possessions, experience and certain states.

Examples: I am a student. I am organized. I have experience in sales.

Business English tip: "I'm interested in marketing" is correct. "I'm interested by marketing" is a common French-influenced mistake. In English, use interested in.

Voici un exemple de présentation en anglais pour une étudiante en école de commerce. Elle présente son parcours, ses études, son expérience, ses compétences, ses centres d'intérêt et son projet professionnel.

Hi, I'm Amaya Martin. I'm a first-year business student at Montpellier Business School.

I'm originally from Lyon, but I currently live in Montpellier.

Last summer, I completed a two-month internship in sales, where I gained experience in customer service and communication.

I'm particularly interested in marketing and international business. I'm organized, curious and comfortable working in a team.

In the future, I'd like to work in an international company and develop my skills in marketing.

Notice the structure: Name → Studies → Background → Experience → Skills → Interests → Career goal.

Challenge

Try to introduce yourself without reading a script. Use keywords rather than complete sentences.

Then repeat the introduction and improve one aspect: pronunciation, vocabulary, fluency or confidence.
