When sixteen-year-old Liam saw pictures of a polluted beach on social media, he decided to share them with his friends. At first, he simply wanted people to become aware of the problem. Within a few days, however, hundreds of students had reposted his message.
The online campaign quickly attracted the attention of a local environmental organisation, which invited Liam and other volunteers to organise a beach clean-up. More than 300 people took part in the event, and several local newspapers reported on the initiative.
Liam was surprised to discover that a simple post could have such an impact. He realised that social media could do more than entertain people: it could also encourage citizens to act together for a common cause.
However, Liam also noticed that some users shared false information about the campaign without checking the facts. Others posted negative comments instead of helping. This experience taught him that digital citizenship means using online platforms responsibly, verifying information before sharing it and respecting other people’s opinions.
Today, Liam continues to use social media to promote environmental projects. He believes that virtual communities can become powerful tools for positive change when people use them wisely.
