When Maya arrived at Greenfield High School, she was nervous. She had recently moved from South Africa to the United Kingdom with her family and did not know anyone. Although she spoke English fluently, she quickly realised that every school has its own traditions, habits and ways of communicating.
During her first weeks, some classmates asked curious questions about her country, her accent and her previous school. Most of them simply wanted to learn more, but a few comments made Maya feel uncomfortable. Instead of remaining silent, she decided to join the school’s Diversity Club, where students from different backgrounds met every week to organise discussions and cultural events.
The club soon launched an “International Week”. Students prepared exhibitions about their countries, introduced traditional music and food, and shared stories about their families and cultures. Teachers also organised debates on respect, stereotypes and equal opportunities.
By the end of the project, many students admitted that they had discovered cultures they knew very little about. Maya also felt more confident. She realised that inclusion does not mean ignoring differences but recognising and respecting them.
Today, Greenfield High School continues to organise similar projects because teachers believe that diversity is an opportunity to learn from one another and to prepare students for life in an increasingly interconnected world.
